"Terrianne Needs Help With a 9 Week Old Biting Rottweiler Puppy"...

Terrianne Writes:

Hi,

We have an awesome 9 week old Rottweiler Puppy. She is fondly nicknamed Cujo. Her nipping is so much that
my children can't play with her. We want to play with her or just sit with her after a walk and watch TV as a family
but she is biting within minutes. We also try to substitute chew toys for arms/legs. I tried growling like Mom and
grabbing the scruff of her neck - she submits and then as soon as I release she pounces, teeth ready. How can I
get her to stop biting Also having aggressive reaction when I try to take something she picked up on a walk out of
her mouth. Try to reinforce "good out" when she is OK but sometimes she brings it to another level. Words of
wisdom???

Dog Training Advisor Responds:

When you scruff her do not let go while she is tense or while she is looking at you. When she looks away and or
licks her lips, and her muscles relax then let her go.

IF she were with the mother mom would hold her until she is 100% still and relaxed. If then she still tries to get up
and continue the game do it again and keep doing it every time she goes to bite. She will eventually get the idea
that you are not joking and not going to give up.

Also if you are giving her Bones to chew on make sure the kids hold one end while she chews the other( this is
her learning that you (and the kids) are in control of the cheweys.

It is very more then likely possible she will still try to chew on your hands while holding onto the bone, just keep
directing her to the free end of the bone to chew. You might even need to give her a smart pop in the nose if she
refuses to go for the free end of the bone and keeps going for your hand ( this is kind of like the idea that
something soft like a wash cloth is easier for them to chew and get relief from teething as they must learn that
they can chew the hard bones and also get relief).
